In this Snail Mail Ideas interview I am interviewing Raquel from Sweden (aka @Marionbcn on Instagram!) She makes very creative snail mail with her big collection of washi tapes, stamps and her beautiful calligraphy handwriting! But who is behind these creative letters?
Hi Raquel! Thank you for this interview! Let start with the beginning of your own Snail Mail adventure!
When did you start with writing letters? In 1988!
How did your mail looked like back then? When did you started to decorating your letters? The first letters were written in colorful papers I bought at a local bookstore called ‘llibreria Castellet’ back in my hometown in Barcelona. Then I went in a long kawaii phase, where I just bought hello kitty and other sanrio sets online to write letters with. I only started making my own letter sets about 5 years ago.
When you start with a letter for a penpal what is the first thing you start with? Do you have a ritual? Normally after saying thank you for your letter and asking ‘How are you doing’, i’d normally describe where I am writing from ( normally in my work place, but i have also written letters outdoors, on planes or at the waiting room of the dentist!) and what Im up yo ( listening to music, drinking tea…)
And one thing everybody is curious about! How does your craft space looks like? I don’t have any sadly! I did when I lived still with my parents, but nowadays my husband and I live in a small flat downtown Stockholm, which is such an expensive capital, so we have no studio or spare room, so I basically create in my sofa table in the living room, or in the kitchen table. Someday I hope to have my own studio in a bigger flat tho!.
If you have to go to an island in the middle of the ocean, and you could only bring 3 craft/Snail Mail items, what would you really bring with you? I’d bring 1 washi tape roll, 1 pen and a very thick paper block so I can write !When i am scrolling through your instagram I also she a lot of FOX stuff! What is your thing with foxes? Oh! Foxes are just so cute!, but I also like cats, penguins, frogs….
You are very active on Instagram with sharing your mail with a lot of followers! (8400!) But what kind of accounts are you following? What are 5 Instagram accounts that inspire you and why?Yes, this is my main account and there I share my snailmail creations but I have other 2 accounts @lovingstockholm where I post pictures of the beautiful city I live at STOCKHOLM, and @hellojuno13 where you can see pictures of my cat Juno.
It’s very hard to choose only 5 Instagram accounts that inspire me, since there’s lots of creative people out there, but 5 Instagram accounts that inspire me are:
When you are following Raquel on instagram you will not only find snail mail pictures, but also pictures of her adorable cat JUNO! What is the most funniest moment you had with Juno? There’s a lot! She is my best friend and we spend a lot of time together! it’s always specially fun when we chase snow together in our balcony during the snowy months.
What are your favorite shops to buy your craft stuff? and which store you wish you could shop but is not in your country? I buy I guess about 80% of my stuff online, my favorite stores in Stockholm are Blågungan and the Postal museum store, Tiger, Lagerhaus, the paper section at Åhléns city and kalejdoskop are also big fun.
I would love to get a Paper source in town and a Kikki K ( but this one might be opening here during 2016 looks like!)
You probably getting a lot of requests from people that want to be your penpal! How many do you have? and is there a special person you really want to be penpals with? Yes I do, and its very sad to have to let people down, but I do have a life and cant spend all my time writing letters to everyone sadly! I have about 40 penpal, with some of them I write more regulary than with others, there’s people I have been writing with over 20 years! I would like to be penpals with David Grohl from The Foo fighters haha
Lets talk about some not mail related stuff! For which food somebody can wake you up ? Sushi! I can eat sushi anytime!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Oh wow, I will be nearly 50 then! I don’t really plan so much ahead really, I don’t even know yet what Im up to next week!
…. and do you think you still will be writing letters? Totally!
Do you have other hobbies besides making creative mail? Many!, swimming, last year I took place in my first open waters swimming competition, and Im planning on taking more next summer. Calligraphy ( Im learning), knitting, carving stamps ( also learning)
Which quote suits you? and why?A girl should be two things: who and what she wants, goes quite well, since Im an independent girl who doesn’t allow anyone to tell me how I should live my life.
How does a normal day looks like for you? That’s impossible for me to answer, as my days are very very different one from another, to start with I have a very unusual work schedule, I work only every other week, so one week Im very busy and the other I am basically on vacation, anyway, Im gonna tell you what I did yesterday, which was a Sunday.
I wake up by noon ( I love to sleep, LOVE), I gave some breakfast to Juno, who loves to sleep as much as me and my husband, Kenneth, and then went out the balcony with Juno, it was snowing and she loves it. After breakfast and a quick shower, Kenneth and I got to the Södermalm island ( my fave part of Stockholm, we live pretty near) grabbed a take away latte at Starbucks and walked in the snow for a couple of hours. We also did a bit if shopping ( lush and The body shop), and then headed to the Liljeholmen mall, and got groceries at Ica.
We got back home by 5 ish, and I worked on a couple of outgoing parcels and made a journal page in my midori, then we cooked dinner and ate while watching a film.
In late evening I knitted a bit while spending quality time in the sofa next to Kenneth and Juno, and went to bed by midnight.
And the last question, what is one silly thing people should know about you? I sleep with three pillows.
